In an earlier I explained the significance of Carnival and what it was really about.
See : http://that-girl-elli.webflow.io/blog/what-is-carnival
This post is to show you my experience at Carnival on the Mona Campus of The University of the West Indies.
Carnival originated in Trinidad but came to the island of Jamaica when cultures began to "cross over"
According to an article in the Jamaican Gleaner, " Once the University of the West Indies (UWI) opened in 1948, the crossover of cultures began. Some of our small-island neighbours introduced us to carnival."
It is said that since students were unable to return to Trinidad for carnival they made a home away from home.
"It was at Mona that Carnival first took hold in Jamaica, brought in by the students from across the Caribbean region who came north to attend the regional university in the 1950s and early 1960s. (The UWI would spread, geographically, to establish itself in Trinidad and Barbados during the 1960s)." (uwimuseum.wordpress.com)
And to this day Uwi has celebrated Carnival.
Four days of wholesome fun beginning on the Thursday with UWI Soca Integration
J'ouvert on Friday, Ring Road on Saturday and The Beach day on the Sunday
I had my own very experience with it last Saturday.
Which I documented with the photos and youtube video.
GO and check it out
